TDM Pickups are pickups hand crafted by Timpson Music. We custom wind each pickup to your needs based on customer interaction. Without the customer’s needs being met, we would just be another off the shelf brand of pickup (without the luxury of a large marketing team).
We utilize poly, plain enamel and heavy formvar coated wire to tweak the tonal output of your pickup to your liking. Magnet types are available in various grades of Alnico and ceramic to give you the sound you want at a price that’s far better than any other botique pickup maker out there.
Here’s just a sample of what you can expect from a TDM Pickup and while DCR isn’t the best way to describe the tonal characteristics of your pickup, it gives you an idea of how many turns and what wire gauge is used. More turns results in higher DCR and therefore, more midrange bite. Thinner wire will bring the DCR up but the resulting tone will not be louder, just hotter.
Humbuckers:
Vintage series:
The vintage series is a PAF type humbucker available in 49.2 mm (standard PAF), 50mm (metric guitars) and 53mm (F Spaced) designs to fit a variety of guitars. Available in black, white, cream or zebra bobbins, this pickup is wound with 42awg poly or plain enamel to a DC resistance of between 6k and 8.9k depending on how much grunt you want in your pickup. This pickup is available in Alnico 2 and 5.
Heavy Vintage series:
The heavy vintage series is the same as the Vintage series but is wound in 42awg heavy formvar wire to slightly change the tonal characteristics of the pickup. This wire, coupled with our Alnico magnets, offers an enhanced bass and treble response while slightly scooping the midrange. This has been a very popular solution for people looking for that smooth, jazzy tone.
SHO series:
The SHO series is more of a higher output PAF style humbucker. This pickup is wound to specs of 12k and above utilizing Alnico 5, 8 or Ceramic magnets to give you the grind and grunt you’ve been looking for.
Single Coils:
Our single coils are vintage spec single coils utilizing forbin bobbins and magnetized polepieces.
Vintage series:
Vintage spec single coil with alnico 3 or 5 magnets. Wound with plain enamel or poly wire to a resistance of 6-8k.
Heavy vintage series:
Same as Vintage series with heavy formvar wire
TDM Pickups start very reasonably priced for a custom, hand built pickup starting from $65 for a single coil and $85 for a humbucker. This includes wax potting but does not include covers. Various cover options are available depending on which pickup you’re interested in. Covers typically bring the price up an additional $15 for a humbucker and $5 for a single. Every pickup is tested, labeled with the DC resistance figures on the back but we do not, however, disclose our secret “recipe” to making your tone sound as sweet and articulate as you wanted..
